The 2002 Saratoga Races to Riches Contest Rules

1) No purchase necessary.

2) All entrants must be 18-years of age to enter.

3) Journal-Register Company sports writer Dan Nowak will select the horse he thinks will win the feature race from Saratoga each contest day. For each winner selected by Nowak, $200 will be donated to the Newspaper in Education fund. Nowak’s picks will appear every contest day in the New Haven Register, Bristol Press, New Britain Herald, Middletown Press and Torrington Register-Citizen.

4) Patrons at Sports Haven, the East Haven, Milford, West Haven, Torrington and Bridgeport Off-Track Betting branches and the New Britain and Bristol RaceView Centers may participate by selecting the horse they think will win the feature race from Saratoga. The feature race Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday is the eighth race. (Except July 24, Aug 23, and 29th when it is the ninth race). The feature race on Saturdays and Sundays is the ninth race, except Aug 31 when it is the eighth race. The feature race, Saturday, Aug 24 is the tenth race.

5) After the feature race is declared official, the branch manager or person in charge, will pull entries out of the entry box until an entry is selected with the winner of the feature race. Entries will be mixed prior to drawing. The drawing will be announced and conducted in full view of the public and be witnessed by one other branch employee. The wining entry will be signed by the branch manager and a witness. The winner will be announced to the public and posted in each branch. Each entrant selected at their location will win a $50 voucher and will be entered in the finals. A second name will be pulled. This person will not win a cash prize, but will be eligible to participate in the finals.

6) Patrons may participate in the contest every day, but may only qualify for the finals once. If a participant has already qualified for the finals, he is eligible to win the $50 daily prize. In the event that a participant has already qualified for the finals and is still the winner of the daily prize for two or more times, a new name will be pulled from the box until an eligible entrant is drawn. This entrant will qualify for the finals only. In the event that no one selects the winner of the feature race at one of the locations, then there will be no winner.

7) The contest begins Wednesday July 24 and daily entries conclude September 1. The contest will not be held on Tuesdays). There are 35 contest days. (Contests will not be held at the Bridgeport or West Haven branches on Sundays (July 28, August 4, 11, 18, 25, Sept 1) during the contest. The finals will be held September 2 at Sports Haven.

8) Entries must be in no later than 4:00 PM each contest day.

9) Entrants must present identification when submitting entries.

10) In the event of a scratch, Nowak and entrants will receive the post time favorite.

11) Entries and fields go as a single betting interest.

12) Finalists will have a fictional bankroll of $120. Each finalists will make four $20 win wagers and one $40 win wager on the Saratoga races. Entries will be submitted throughout the afternoon at a special scorer’s table set up on the dance floor.

13) Dan Nowak will also participate in the finals. Any money he wins will be donated to the Newspaper in Education Fund. His selections will appear in the newspapers, September 2.

14) The finalists whose winning selections have the highest total pay-offs wins the contest. There is a 24-1 cap on all wagers. First place is worth $5,000, second, $2,500, third, $1,500, fourth, $600, fifth, $500, sixth $400, seventh $300, eighth, $250, ninth $200, tenth $100.

15) In the event of a tie, the prize money for the tying positions will be combined and distributed equally.

16) All rules stated herein apply equally to the finals.

17) Participants need not be present at the end of each contest day nor at the conclusion of the finals in order to win, however finalists’ prizes must be claimed in person with positive identification.

18) One entry per person per day.

19) The decision of the judges in all matters related to the contest is final.

20) Winners are subject to all state and federal tax requirements.

21) The receipt of a registration form signifies the entrant’s acceptance of all rules and conditions stated herein.

22) All participants agree to have their name, statement or image appear in any publicity material (posters, newsletters, programs, etc) and /or participating newspapers in conjunction with this contest without further compensation.

23) Officers and employees and their immediate families of Autotote Corporation and its agencies and affiliates, Journal Register publications and its agencies and affiliates and the employees of the Division of Special Revenue, State of Connecticut, are not eligible to participate in the contest.

24) The right is reserved to terminate, modify or withdraw this contest at any time without prior notice.
